2nd Largest Metals Mine in World Vetoed Due to Clean Water Act

December 15, 2020

Alaska’s Pebble Mine project was vetoed under section 404(c) of the federal Clean Water Act. Construction of the mine would have cost [?]$4.7 billion. Reserve estimates place Pebble as the largest undeveloped copper mine in the world, and also including very large gold and molybdenum deposits. The ruling was a reversal of rulings as recent as July 2020, reflecting increased concerns about possible failings of some huge mining tailing ponds and acid mine drainage into the Salmon-rich Bristol Bay. ECOVAP believes that these environmental concerns could be greatly alleviated by its ability to naturally reduce wastewater volumes by at least 90%. (full story)
